Story

Delicate pansy blossoms unfold across a plain cream ground, their petals touched with blue and yellow, framed by soft green leaves and stems. The arrangement is simple, letting each bloom stand out with botanical clarity. This image was made using stipple engraving and watercolor in 1827. The artist, Pierre Joseph Redouté (1759–1840), worked as a botanical illustrator, holding citizenship in Belgium, France, and the Southern Netherlands.
