Story

A seated man wears a plaid shirt patterned in red and blue, placed within a room where the walls glow yellow and blue. Household items fill the space around him, giving the setting a lived-in, personal feel. The piece is rendered in oil, completed in 1954. Ralph Fasanella, an American painter and trade unionist (1914–1997), also created the notable work Subway Riders.
