Story
A cluster of pink roses fills a white porcelain vase decorated with blue patterning, set against a bold red backdrop with purple fabric and tableware arranged nearby. The composition draws the eye through contrasts of color, the softness of the petals set off by the sharpness of the red field behind them. This oil painting was made in 1916 and is held at the National Galleries of Scotland. Samuel John Peploe (1871–1935) was a British painter working within the United Kingdom. The blue decoration on the porcelain vase stands out as a detail worth close attention, its pattern echoing the coolness of the purple fabric against the surrounding warmth of red and pink.
