Story
A quiet country path stretches into the distance, bordered on both sides by tall, slender poplar trees that rise like a natural colonnade. Along the lane, small figures move on foot, dwarfed by the height of the trees and the openness of the surrounding land. The palette is built from greens, golds, and earthy browns, giving the scene a warm, autumnal feel. This piece was painted in 1885 in oil, and it is held today at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. The artist, Vincent van Gogh, became associated with Post-Impressionism, developing a style defined by expressive color and brushwork. One detail worth noticing is how the trunks of the poplars seem to lean slightly, their rhythm guiding the eye down the lane toward the horizon where the figures gradually fade into the landscape's soft, hazy light.
