Story

Angular shapes and loose, gestural marks spread across a pale cream surface, rendered in blue, red, and black that seem to tilt and collide in rhythmic motion. This color woodcut, titled Kahnfahrt (Boat Trip), comes from the Klänge print series by Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944), held at the Yale University Art Gallery. Kandinsky, a Russian artist associated with Expressionism, developed abstraction through such bold, nonrepresentational compositions.
