Story
Two girls rest on a dirt path shaded by trees, their white blouses and darker skirts set against the greenery around them, one of them cradling a handful of gathered nuts. Low plants, clover, and plantain spread across the ground near their bare feet, giving the scene a quiet, rustic feel. William-Adolphe Bouguereau painted this oil work in 1882, and it is held today at the Detroit Institute of Arts, having entered the collection as a gift from Mrs. William E. Scripps. Bouguereau, who lived from 1825 to 1905, worked within the academic art tradition, and among his recognized paintings is Dante and Virgil in Hell. Looking closely, the barefoot pose of the girls and the texture of the hazel leaves above them add a gentle, naturalistic touch to the composition, grounding the figures firmly in their outdoor surroundings.
