Cornish Headlands

Story

Rugged cliffs rise on either side of a glowing turquoise sea, their rocky edges framing the water beneath a soft, pale sky. The palette moves through greens, blues, and earthy browns, giving the headlands a weighty, textured presence against the calm expanse of ocean. This oil painting, titled Cornish Headlands, was completed in 1898 and is held today at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Its creator, Abbott Handerson Thayer (1849–1921), was an American painter and naturalist whose notable work includes the Stevenson Memorial. Looking closely at the composition, the contrast between the solid, earth-toned cliffs and the luminous turquoise water draws the eye toward the horizon, where the pale sky meets the sea in a quiet, open stretch of light.
