Story

A towering, snow-covered summit looms over a wooded valley and a quiet lake, painted in soft whites, greens, and browns. The scene captures a sense of rugged wilderness, with layered terrain stretching toward the distant peak. Albert Bierstadt completed this oil painting in 1876. Bierstadt, born in the Kingdom of Prussia and later a citizen of the United States, painted within the Hudson River school tradition. The piece entered the Corcoran Gallery of Art through a museum purchase funded by its gallery fund.
