Artist

Albrecht Dürer was a German painter, printmaker, and theorist widely regarded as one of the greatest artists of the Northern Renaissance. Born in Nuremberg, Dürer trained first as a goldsmith under his father before apprenticing with painter and printmaker Michael Wolgemut. His extraordinary skill in woodcut and engraving quickly brought him international recognition, allowing his prints to circulate across Europe while he was still in his twenties.Influenced by travels to Italy and contact with artists such as Giovanni Bellini and Leonardo da Vinci, Dürer combined Northern European detail with Italian ideas of proportion, perspective, and classical beauty. His celebrated works include Melencolia I, Knight, Death and the Devil, and his dramatic Apocalypse woodcut series. Beyond painting and printmaking, Dürer also wrote influential theoretical treatises on mathematics, anatomy, and artistic proportion. His mastery of line, texture, and observation established him as one of the defining figures of Renaissance art and one of history’s greatest printmakers.
