Helene with Colored Turban

Story

A woman sits with her eyes shut, a red patterned turban wrapped around her head and a dark red garment covering her shoulders, set against a flat green background. The piece was painted in 1910 using oil, and it is held at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Alexei Jawlensky (1864–1941) worked within Expressionism, and his output includes the notable painting Abstract Head. The contrast between the vivid red of the turban and the surrounding green gives the figure a strong presence despite the stillness of her closed eyes.
