Story

Rows of red and orange rectangular forms interlock with curved lines, filling a cream ground with a dense, patterned rhythm. The marks sit close together, built up block by block until the whole surface feels like a woven field of color. This untitled piece belongs to the artist's Music Series, created in 1978 and held at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Alma Thomas (1891–1978), an American artist, worked within the Color Field movement, bringing a mosaic-like structure to her abstraction. Looking closely, the curved lines break the rigid grid just enough to suggest motion within the stacked rectangles.

Where it works
