Story

A round celestial chart dominates the composition, its concentric bands filled with Latin inscriptions and symbols marking the heavens. Smaller diagrams sit at the corners, while cherubs flutter around the circular design against a cream backdrop, adding ornamental flourish to the scientific subject. This is Plate 16 from Harmonia Macrocosmica. Andreas Cellarius (1596–1665), a Dutch-German astronomer, cartographer, and geographer, produced work rooted in careful astronomical observation and decorative map-making traditions.
