Story
A radiant sun rises over a landscape of curved hills and clustered farm buildings, the whole scene simplified into bold shapes of yellow, green, black, and orange. The composition flattens the land into smooth, rounded forms, giving the impression of light pulsing outward from the horizon. This piece was painted in 1929 using oil, and it is held today at the Princeton Art Museum. It came to the museum as a gift from John S. McGovern, Class of 1926. The painting is the work of Arthur Garfield Dove, an artist associated with early American abstraction who translated natural scenes into pared-down, glowing forms. One detail worth noticing is how the dark silhouettes of the farm buildings sit low against the brightness above, anchoring the abstracted hills and sky with a quiet sense of rural stillness beneath the dramatic burst of color.
