Story

A dim, crowded bar fills the frame, men and a woman gathered close around a large stove, some seated, some standing in conversation. The image is a gelatin silver print photograph made in 1937, capturing the ale house interior with sharp, unposed detail. Berenice Abbott (1898–1991), an American photographer associated with straight photography, documented the scene at McSorley's Ale House on East 7th Street in Manhattan.

Where it works
