Wheels

Story

A locomotive's massive wheels and connecting rods fill the frame, caught sideways with steam drifting across the dense machinery. The composition emphasizes the gleaming curves and rigid struts of the engine's undercarriage, rendered in stark black and white. This photograph, titled Wheels, dates to 1939 and comes from Charles Sheeler (1883–1965), an American artist associated with Precisionism. The Detroit Institute of Arts holds the piece, acquired through a purchase fund.
