Story

A busy stretch of Fifth Avenue fills the composition, its buildings draped with American flags above a dense crowd, all captured in shades of blue, orange, and cream. Childe Hassam made this watercolor in 1918. Hassam (1859–1935), an American painter associated with Impressionism, brought his loose, light-filled brushwork to this urban scene. The piece entered the Dallas Museum of Art through the Munger Fund, given in memory of Mrs. George Aldredge.
