Story
A village church rises above a cluster of nearby buildings, its spire tiled in blue, with a dirt path leading toward the scene. The composition is rendered in soft whites, blues, and earthy tones that suggest the texture of stone and roofs under open sky. The painting, titled The Church at Vétheuil, was created in 1878 in oil and is held today at the National Galleries of Scotland. Its painter, Claude Monet (1840–1926), was a French artist associated with Impressionism, a movement that reshaped how light and atmosphere could be captured on canvas. One detail worth lingering on is the way the blue-tiled spire stands out against the muted palette surrounding it, drawing the eye upward through the quiet arrangement of rooftops and path below.
