Story
Jagged white and grey cliffs rise sharply above a sea rendered in deep blue-green, capturing the rugged coastline of Belle Île with a sense of raw natural force. The composition emphasizes the contrast between the pale stone and the dark, restless water below. This landscape painting was created in 1886 using oil on canvas. Claude Monet (1840–1926) was a French painter associated with Impressionism, also known for his painting Impression, Sunrise. One detail worth noticing is how the cliff faces seem to catch shifting light, their rough textures standing out sharply against the smoother, flowing surface of the sea, giving the whole scene a feeling of movement and weathered endurance along the rocky shoreline.
