Story
A twisted tree leans in the foreground, its bare branches framing a view of calm blue water stretching toward distant peaks dusted with snow. The sky above is soft and pale, giving the scene a quiet, open feel typical of a coastal landscape rather than a crowded harbor view. This painting of Cap d'Antibes was made in 1888 in oil and is held at the Hill-Stead Museum. The artist, Claude Monet (1840–1926), was a French painter associated with Impressionism, a movement that shaped his approach to light and color. One detail worth noticing is how the gnarled trunk and limbs twist sharply against the smooth horizon, creating a contrast between the rough, knotted wood and the gentle curve of the sea and mountains beyond.
