Story
A carriage carrying well-dressed passengers sits at the edge of an open green racecourse, with horses and onlookers scattered across the grass beneath a sky full of clouds. The scene stretches out in a wide, calm view, giving as much attention to the landscape as to the people watching the races. This picture, titled At the Races in the Countryside, was painted in 1869 in oil by Edgar Degas, and it is held today at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. Degas, who lived from 1834 to 1917 and worked in France, is associated with Impressionism and also created The Ballet Class. One detail worth noticing is how the carriage and its riders are placed above the field, letting the viewer's eye travel from their raised position down across the grass toward the distant horses and spectators under the overcast sky.
Where it works
A muted landscape suited to living rooms and dining rooms, and to hotel guest rooms, in a horizontal format.
