Story
A cluster of riders on horseback waits in an open meadow, their bright jackets standing out against a soft, subdued stretch of land under a wide sky. The horses are brown-coated and calm, grouped loosely together as if pausing before the signal to run. This scene, painted around 1882 in oil on panel, belongs to the Clark Art Institute. The artist, Edgar Degas (1834–1917), worked within Impressionism and also created The Ballet Class. One detail worth noticing is how the riders' colorful clothing punctuates the otherwise quiet, muted tones of the surrounding field, drawing the eye across the gathered group before the anticipated start.
