Story
A horse with a brown and white coat stands in an open field of grass, positioned above a river where steamboats pass and industrial buildings rise in the distance. The scene places a calm pastoral animal against a backdrop of commerce and machinery along the water below. This oil painting was made in 1871 and is held at the National Gallery of Art. Edgar Degas (1834–1917), a French artist associated with Impressionism, is also known for The Ballet Class. Looking closely, the eye is drawn to the way the meadow's quiet greenery sits just above the hazy line of smokestacks and boats, letting the horse's stillness meet the distant hum of industry in a single view.
