Story
Riders on horseback cluster together across an open green field, while in the distance factory buildings release smoke into a gray sky. The quiet rural scene sits close to signs of industry pressing in from behind. This piece, titled The Races, was painted in 1871 by Edgar Degas using oil on wood, and it is held at the National Gallery of Art. Degas was a French artist associated with Impressionism, and he is also known for The Ballet Class. One detail worth noticing is how the smoking chimneys stand out against the pale sky, pulling the eye away from the horses and toward the built structures looming behind the grassy field.
