The Ball

Story

A small child wearing a yellow hat chases a ball across a stretch of sandy ground within a park, caught mid-motion in play. In the distance, under the shade of a broad-leaved tree, two figures linger near the water's edge, watching the scene unfold. The composition captures a quiet moment of entertainment, the game of the child contrasting with the stillness of the adults beyond. Painted in 1899, this piece was made with oil on card glued on wood, and it is held today at the Musée d'Orsay. Félix Vallotton (1865–1925) was associated with Les Nabis, bringing a distinct flatness and bold framing to everyday scenes like this one. Worth noticing is how the dark trees loom heavily above the pale sand, pulling the eye downward toward the small, bright figure of the child below.
