Broken Forms

Story

Jagged shapes in red, blue, green, yellow, and black break across the canvas, splitting the surface into angular fragments that overlap and press against one another. There is no single recognizable scene, only a dense arrangement of geometric pieces that seem to collide and interlock. This oil painting, titled Broken Forms, was made in 1914 and is held at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Franz Marc (1880–1916), a German painter associated with Expressionism, also created the notable work Blue Horse I. Looking closely, the colors do not stay within clean edges but bleed and shift where the fractured forms meet, giving the whole composition a restless, splintered energy that pulls the eye from one shard of color to the next.
