The Unfortunate Land of Tyrol (Das arme Land Tirol)

Story

Jagged buildings, animal shapes, and fragments of landscape crowd together in yellow, blue, red, and green, forming a composition that feels broken apart and reassembled at odd angles. The painting, titled The Unfortunate Land of Tyrol, was made in 1913 in oil and is held at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, where it came into the collection through the Solomon R. Guggenheim Founding Collection. Franz Marc (1880–1916) was a German painter associated with Expressionism, and his work also includes The Tower of Blue Horses. Looking closely, the sharp, fractured edges of the buildings seem to merge with the surrounding animal and landscape forms, blurring the line between structure and nature in a way that unsettles any single, stable viewpoint across the canvas.
