Story

A hazy tropical river winds between tall trees, its banks softened by mist, while a small boat carrying figures drifts on the water and golden light filters through the warm air. This oil painting dates from 1881 and belongs to the Hudson River school tradition. Frederic Edwin Church (1826–1900), an American painter, created the work, which entered the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art as a bequest from Clara Hinton Gould.
