Story
A hazy sky stretches over a distant hillside where the Acropolis rises, while a windmill and scattered ruins occupy the foreground, drawing the eye across layers of landscape toward the ancient structure. This view was created in 1869 by Frederic Edwin Church (1826–1900), an American painter associated with the Hudson River school, now held at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
Where it works
