Circus Sideshow

Story

A group of musicians and performers stand on a raised platform in front of a gathered crowd, lit by the glow of a circus sideshow at night. Men and women in the audience watch as a musician plays an instrument among the figures on stage, the whole scene built from countless small dots of warm and cool color. Georges Seurat painted this oil work in 1887, and it is now held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Seurat, who lived from 1859 to 1891, worked in the pointillist technique within the Neo-impressionist movement, and he also created A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. One detail worth noticing is how the dotted brushwork softens the outlines of the crowd, making the figures seem to flicker under the artificial light of the performance.
