Story
A quiet pier stretches out over still water near Honfleur, its wooden posts lining the shore along the Seine estuary as a hazy sky settles into evening above a stretch of calm sea. The scene belongs to marine art, built from small, careful touches of color that merge into soft atmosphere rather than sharp line. Painted in 1886 in oil on canvas with its wood frame also painted by the artist, the work hangs at the Museum of Modern Art, having come to the museum as a gift from Mrs. David M. Levy. Georges Seurat (1859–1891), a French painter, helped shape pointillism and Neo-impressionism, and is also known for A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. Looking closely, the surface dissolves into countless specks of pigment that only resolve into pier, cloud, and water from a distance.
