Story

Soft curved bands of pink and white drift across a field of pale yellow, cream, and peachy-beige, dividing the surface into gentle tonal passages rather than sharp blocks of color. The curling lines seem to breathe and overlap, giving the whole canvas a quiet sense of movement without any fixed shape or object. Georgia O'Keeffe painted this work in 1959 in oil on canvas, and it now belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art, having come to the museum through her bequest. O'Keeffe, who was American and lived from 1887 to 1986, is remembered for her painting Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1. One detail worth noticing is how the pink curves taper and thin as they cross the lighter cream ground, creating a subtle sense of depth within the otherwise flat, abstract field.
