Story
A woman sits with her hair gathered into a bun, her body turned away from view so that only her back and pale skin are visible against a backdrop of blue and orange patterned fabric. She kneels in the seiza position, wrapped in a bathrobe, in a quiet moment after bathing. The sitter has been identified as Nakatani Tsuru. This color woodblock print was created in 1920 and is held at the Toledo Museum of Art, having entered the collection through a museum purchase. Its maker, Goyō Hashiguchi (1880–1921), was a Japanese painter, ukiyo-e artist, and wood engraver. The print functions as a portrait, though the woman's face remains hidden from the viewer. One detail worth noticing is the contrast between the smoothness of her skin and the busy geometric patterning of the textiles surrounding her, which draws the eye across the composition.
