Sailing Boats at Argenteuil

Story

A cluster of small sailboats rests on a calm river near a timber pier, their pale sails catching light against the water. Low hills rise softly in the distance, and the whole scene is rendered in soft browns, greens, and blue tones. This oil painting, finished in 1888, belongs to the Impressionist tradition. Gustave Caillebotte (1848–1894) was French, working also as an engineer and art collector, and the piece is held at the Musée d'Orsay.
