Story
A broad stretch of blue river fills the scene, bordered by lush green plant life along the banks. In the distance, a cluster of buildings rises against the horizon, while pale clouds drift across a soft blue sky above the calm current. The composition captures a quiet moment along the water, with the structures appearing small beneath the open expanse of air and light. This piece, titled The Seine at Argenteuil, was painted around 1892 in oil and is held today at the Clark Art Institute. Its creator, Gustave Caillebotte (1848–1894), was a French painter associated with Impressionism, also known for his work Paris Street; Rainy Day. One detail worth noticing is how the vegetation frames the water, drawing the eye toward the distant rooftops nestled beneath the pale clouds.
