Flowers and Fruit

Story

A vase holding pink and yellow blossoms sits beside strawberries and citrus fruits, with a white teapot nearby, all arranged on a dark table set against a muted green backdrop. The composition was painted in 1866 in oil by Henri Fantin-Latour and belongs to the Toledo Museum of Art, having entered the collection through the Libbey Endowment with a gift from Edward Drummond Libbey. Fantin-Latour, who lived from 1836 to 1904 and worked in France, is associated with movements including French Realism, Impressionism, and Symbolism. One detail worth noticing is the contrast between the soft, layered petals of the flowers and the smooth, rounded surface of the white teapot, which anchors the brighter fruit and blooms against the darker tones of the table and background.
