Story
Three peaches, blushed in red and yellow, sit on a white plate set against a dark wooden surface. The composition stays spare, letting the fruit's rounded forms and warm coloring hold the eye. Painted in oil on paper on canvas in 1868, the piece reflects Henri Fantin-Latour's French Realist sensibility within a career that also touched Impressionism and Symbolism. It came to the National Gallery of Art from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon.
