Story
A blue and white vase holds a cluster of anemones, standing on a table next to a wooden chair, with striped wallpaper in warm tones filling the background. The arrangement forms a still life painted in oil by Henri Matisse in 1922, now held at the Baltimore Museum of Art. The work came into the museum's collection through Dr. Claribel Cone and Miss Etta Cone of Baltimore, Maryland. Matisse, who lived from 1869 to 1954, was a French artist associated with Fauvism, and he also created the notable work Dance. Worth noticing is how the warm striped pattern of the wallpaper plays against the cool blue tones of the porcelain vase, giving the quiet domestic scene a sense of pattern and color working together across the canvas.
