The Waterfall

Story

A dense tropical scene fills the composition, with layered green foliage, flowering red blossoms, and animals and figures tucked beneath the overhanging canopy. The arrangement draws the eye deep into the thicket, where shapes of creatures and people emerge gradually from the shadowed undergrowth. This oil painting was completed in 1910 and is held at the Art Institute of Chicago. Henri Rousseau, who lived from 1844 to 1910, worked in a naïve art style and also painted The Dream. One detail worth lingering on is the way the red flowers punctuate the thick green layers, giving the dense jungle a sudden flash of brightness amid the shade. The scene feels enclosed and quiet, as though the viewer has come upon a secluded corner of wilderness untouched by anything beyond its own tangled plant life.
