Story

Interlocking patches of yellow, blue, red, orange, and green drift across the surface, divided by slender dark lines that suggest hulls and masts in collision. Painted in oil in 1913, the piece hangs at the National Gallery of Art under the title Improvisation 31 (Sea Battle).
