Story
A thick cluster of roses and tulips rises from a glass bowl, set against deep shadow, with fruit scattered on the surface beneath. The arrangement crowds the frame, mixing bright petals with darker leaves and stems. This oil painting dates from 1636 and belongs to the Crocker Art Museum. Jan Davidsz de Heem, born in 1606 and died in 1684, worked as a Dutch painter and botanical illustrator.
