Story
A turbulent sky dominates the composition, packed with heavy grey and white storm clouds that churn across the frame. Beneath them, a warm golden light pushes upward, breaking through the mass of vapor as though the sun were fighting to be seen. This small study, painted in oil on paper mounted on canvas, dates to 1821 and is held at the National Gallery of Art. Its maker, John Constable (1776–1837), was a British landscape painter associated with Romanticism. The contrast between the cool, shadowed clouds above and the warm glow pressing up from below gives the scene a strong sense of movement, as if the weather itself were shifting while being observed.
