Story

Tall trees rise over gentle hills, with a valley opening toward the horizon beneath a sky thick with clouds. Soft greens and earthy browns give the scene a quiet, rural feel, typical of open countryside rather than any specific place. The piece is painted in oil on cardboard set within a wood panel, undated. John Constable, a British painter working within Romanticism, came to the Phillips Collection through its 1920 acquisition.
