Story

A herder sits among a small flock of goats, resting beneath a stand of tall trees while open fields and distant hills stretch out behind them. The scene unfolds in a mix of green, brown, and blue tones that give the setting a quiet, natural feel. This oil painting was made in 1823 and is held at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. John Constable (1776–1837) was a British painter associated with Romanticism, also known for his work Dedham Lock and Mill. One detail worth noticing is how the shade of the trees frames the resting figure and animals, drawing the eye toward the brighter, open land beyond.
