Story

A wide valley stretches beneath a cloudy sky, its greens and browns capturing fields and trees in the open air. A tall tree rises in the foreground, anchoring the view, while a river winds through the land toward a distant church spire that marks the horizon. This expansive scene was painted in 1828 in oil and is held today by the National Galleries of Scotland. John Constable (1776–1837) was a British painter associated with Romanticism, also known for his work Dedham Lock and Mill. One detail worth lingering on is the contrast between the dark, textured foliage of the foreground tree and the pale, airy expanse of sky and valley beyond it, which gives the composition its sense of depth and distance.
