Story

A timber pier reaches into restless water beneath a turbulent, cloud-filled sky, while small boats rest on the sand and figures move along the shoreline, all rendered in subdued greens and browns. The scene is painted in oil, completed in 1822. The artist, John Constable (1776–1837), was a British landscape painter associated with Romanticism, and his work also shows elements of realism.
