Story
A terrace runs along a riverbank beneath a row of tall trees, with small boats drifting on the water and the whole scene bathed in a glowing sky of warm earth tones. This view, titled Mortlake Terrace, was created in 1827 by Joseph Mallord William Turner, working in oil, and the piece is held today at the National Gallery of Art. Turner, born in 1775 and died in 1851, was a British painter associated with Romanticism and English painting, and he also produced the notable work Calais Pier. Worth noticing is how the golden light settles across the terrace and water alike, giving the whole riverside scene a soft, unified warmth that draws the eye from the shaded trees toward the brightened horizon.
