Story
Shards of yellow, blue, red, and green collide across the canvas, building a dense, layered composition in which fragmented forms suggest movement and flashing light. The scene reads as a swirl of energy rather than a clear picture, with shapes overlapping and pressing against one another as if caught mid-motion. The painting was made in 1913, rendered in oil, and is held today at the Yale University Art Gallery. Its creator, Joseph Stella (1877–1946), an Italian-American artist, worked within Futurism, a movement concerned with capturing speed and dynamism. One detail worth noticing is how the colors seem to pulse against each other, giving the whole surface a sense of flickering light rather than a single fixed source of illumination.
