Story
A seated woman takes shape through fractured planes of white, gray, black, and brown, her form broken into interlocking geometric facets rather than rendered in continuous outline. This piece, titled Portrait of Madame Josette Gris, was painted in oil on panel in 1916. The artist, Juan Gris (1887–1927), was Spanish, and worked within the cubism movement, building the sitter's likeness from abstracted structure rather than naturalistic detail.
