Kajikazawa in Kai Province

Story

A fisher balances on a jagged outcrop above churning water, casting a net while a child waits nearby on the rocks. The river below flows with sharp, angular waves, and across the distance Mount Fuji rises calmly under a pale sky streaked with blue and beige. This color woodblock print, titled Kajikazawa in Kai Province, was made by Katsushika Hokusai around 1830, with another record dating it to 1831. The scene belongs to the meisho-e tradition of depicting famous places, and also reflects the broader ukiyo-e genre. Hokusai, born in 1760 and died in 1849, is also known for his print Fine Wind, Clear Morning. One detail worth noticing is how the cliffs seem to echo the jagged rhythm of the waves, linking the fisher's precarious stance to the restless water beneath him.
