The Gate

Story

A towering Gothic gate rises above clusters of sharp-edged buildings, while birds sweep through the sky near a glowing sun, all captured in black lines on pale paper. Lyonel Feininger made this etching and drypoint on light tan vellum paper in 1912, working within an Expressionist approach to the scene. The piece comes from the Daniel J. Terra Collection, now held at the Terra Foundation for American Art.
